Market Recap - March 2013
Renewed global optimism buoyed by the positive batch of economic data from China and US seems to suggest that the global recovery is still on track. This positive sentiment propelled global indices to pre-crisis highs. However, the markets have retreated from their 2013 high over the last two sessions. Tracing the markets’ movements since September 2012, the move up was not accompanied by convincing volume. Thus, we question if investors are having doubts over the sustainability of the rally. The recent surge in the CBOE SPX Volatility Index (VIX) suggests that investors have turned more cautious and are seemingly awaiting further catalysts to set the next direction of the market.

SunVic Chemical Holdings Ltd - Staging a Reversal (Special Technical Update)
The downtrend that kept price under pressure since May 2011 seems to have bottomed. This is evidenced by a breakout above the descending trend line at 0.361. This bullish bias was further reinforced when the neckline (0.361) of a double bottom formation was breached. Since then price has been on a gradual uptrend closing higher. On the technical front, this counter seems bullish and is poised to rise further.

Market Recap - January 2013 (Market Commentary)
December 2012 had been a good month for most stock markets despite concerns over the fiscal cliff. Talks in Washington regarding a resolution to the “fiscal cliff” dominated headlines in December 2012. Bickering between the Republicans and Democrats caused a few hiccups along the way. However, the overall market sentiment remained positive and markets rallied from the sharp selloff seen in late November.

Market Outlook 2013 (Market Commentary)
The US budget outlook and Euro area’s debt crisis are probably the most disquieting matters affecting investors now. As the politicking in the US continues, we believe that the fiscal cliff will eventually be resolved and the market will be steered back onto the growth track. Concerns about the fiscal health of the Euro area will probably linger around but their governments are likely to react when necessary. The US housing numbers and China economic figures are starting to show signs of stability and on the whole, we are optimistic about the STI’s performance in 2013.

Inter-market Analysis (Market Commentary)
Inter-market analysis is a branch of technical analysis that scrutinizes the relationship among the four asset classes: stocks, bonds, commodities and currency. These relationships are generic and may decouple from time to time depending on the prevailing economic conditions. Knowing these relationships not only allows investors to identify the current stage of the business cycle but more importantly to better anticipate the future direction of markets.

Putting on Seat Belts for the Volatile Ride (Commentary)
We are currently experiencing high volatility in the markets with investors trying to find a clear direction as to where markets are heading towards. We look through the eyes of a retail investor and evaluate the impact of a high volatility scenario on one’s portfolio and whether it warrants a tactical shift in one’s portfolio.

Good Herdy Vibes
Singapore’s STI continued to strengthen last week and added another 1.6% to end above the 3200 level. This is a signal that investors are herding into stocks in rising optimism. With the US economy continuing to show weak data, I can only speculate a few reasons for this run up...
